New leaders and new records in Greenpeace’s latest greener electronics guide

The sixth edition of Greenpeace International’s ‘Guide to Greener Electronics’ has been expanded to include televisions and game consoles.(1) Market leaders Microsoft, Nintendo, Philips and Sharp enter at the bottom of the ranking of environmental performance with Nintendo being the first company scoring zero out of a possible 10 points. Philips and Microsoft performed little better, scoring only 2 and 2.7, respectively. The global games consoles sector shipped 62.7 million units in 2006. Growth of 14.9 per cent in the year made it one of the fastest developing sectors in the field of electronic products. The low scores from leading manufacturers Nintendo and Microsoft reveal that they still have a long way to go in improving their environmental policies and practices.

“It’s encouraging to see Sharp and Microsoft providing timelines for the complete elimination of vinyl plastic (PVC) and all brominated flame retardants (BFRs) across their entire product range,” commented Iza Kruszewska, toxics campaigner at Greenpeace International.

The new edition of the quarterly guide shows important changes at the top of the ranking. Sony Ericsson has taken over the top spot from Nokia while Samsung and Sony have surged ahead to now occupy second and third positions.

Nokia and Motorola have both received penalty points for corporate misbehaviour. Greenpeace tested the implementation of product takeback programmes in six countries where Motorola, Nokia and Sony Ericsson claim on their websites to operate product takeback programmes.(2) Nokia representatives in the Philippines, Thailand, Argentina, Russia and India were not informed about their companies’ own programmes and in many cases provided misleading information. Motorola staff in the Philippines, Thailand and India were unable to direct customers to collection points in their respective countries.

As a result, Nokia falls from top position to ninth and Motorola drops from ninth position to fourteenth.

“Companies shouldn’t be under any illusions that we won’t check up on their claims of green greatness,” warned Iza Kruszewska.

Apple, Panasonic, Samsung, Sharp, Sony and Toshiba have recently indicated that they now produce personal computers, lighting LCD panels, camcorders and digital cameras - or at least major components of these items - which are free of PVC and/or BFRs.

Firms which are upwardly mobile in the Greenpeace Guide are those whose entire products, or major components of products, are entirely free of specified hazardous ingredients. Companies which simply commit to eliminating harmful chemicals sometime in the future achieve a lower score.

“Commitments to coming clean in the future are no longer sufficient to secure a top place in the ranking,” said Iza Kruszewska. “Companies that aspire to environmental leadership need to be putting products on the market that are free of harmful chemicals. And they need to offer customers, wherever they are, a service to take back old products for recycling responsibly,” she added.

Bali a high tech resort

The Galungan day and Kuningan day is sacred for bali's people.

At that day not only religius ceremony was held but also the bali's people went home to see their relative's.

Generally The Galungan day happens twice a year but that didn't happen at 2007, it happens only once.

The Balinese have been more exposed to international tourists and generally speak more english than people in other parts of the Indonesian archipelago. They have managed to preserve their culture despite overwhelming foreign influences brought to the region by an ever increasing number of tourists.

Bali is the Hawaii of the East. Of the four million tourists who came to Indonesia in 1994, more than 750,000 flew straight to Bali. The number of foreign and domestic tourists arriving in Bali is now approaching 1.5 million a year. The growth in visitors, which stands at about 10% per year, is expected to continue through the late 1990s. Bali already has a full half of all the hotels in Indonesia.

Bali makes a valuable study in the effects of mass tourism on the social and cultural patterns of an indigenous population. Every generation of visitors arrives to “discover” Bali, pronounce it a paradise, and then once home mourns that it’s lost forever. Visitors are so enthralled with the legend surrounding Bali; many arrive thinking that Indonesia is a part of Bali rather than the other way round.

In bali lots of dogs free on the street. Some are calm some are mad also. so beware :)

Sony PS3 sells more than Wii in Japan

Sony's PlayStation 3 sold 183,217 , Nintendo's Wii sold 159,193 in November In the four weeks in Japan market researcher Enterbrain found.

Tokyo-based Sony slashed the price of the PS3 with 20 gigabytes of hard disk memory by about 10 percent to 44,980 yen (US$409; euro278) from 49,980 yen (US$454; euro308).

The one with 60 gigabytes of memory, which were selling for about 60,000 yen (US$545; euro370), was reduced to about 54,980 yen (US$500; euro339). Sony also introduced a 39,980 yen (US$363; euro246) 40 GB model.

Sousuke Kamei, spokesman for Sony Computer Entertainment, the company's game unit, declined comment on the Enterbrain data as they weren't the company's own or Nintendo's numbers. But he said sales of the 40-gigabyte machines were brisk in Japan.

"Sales are gaining momentum as we head to the year-end, and the availability of more game software for the PS3 is also helping boost sales," he said.

Although its predecessor the PlayStation 2 dominated the gaming market, the PS3 has struggled against the Wii.

Boosting PS3 sales is crucial for Sony's overall business strategy because it also supports the Blu-ray disc next-generation video, which is vying with the rival HD-DVD format.

The Wii has succeeded in drawing people not usually accustomed to playing electronic games by offering easier-to-play games that use a wandlike handheld device for the remote controller.

By October, Nintendo, based in Kyoto, had shipped 13.2 million units worldwide of the Wii, which went on sale late last year. Nintendo, which also makes Pokemon and Super Mario games, is expecting to sell 17.5 million Wiis by the end of this fiscal year, March 31.

CEO AT&T says a faster iphone next year

SAN JOSE, Calif.

AT&T Inc. says it plans to offer a version of an iPhone next year that runs on a faster wireless network so users can get speedier results when surfing the Web.

The move would address one of the main drawbacks about the smart phone made by Apple Inc. and distributed exclusively by wireless carrier AT&T in the United States.

AT&T Chief Executive Officer Randall Stephenson spilled the news during his appearance at an event late Wednesday at the Churchill Club in Santa Clara.

A spokeswoman for Apple declined to comment Thursday.

Stephenson said he didn't know how much more the new version will cost than the existing model, which sells for $399.

Many industy observers had expected apple to make a faster 3G networks, at current model Apple's runs on 2.5G Networks which relatively slow EDGE Network.

The performance is rising up from a dial up to a broadband connection ( example ).
